Festivals, contests, an amazing documentary, scholarships and THE KEMPENFELT CUP!

This newsletter comes packed full of opportunities for students to engage in. Read on – there is something for everyone! 

400PPM 

Barrie North Grade 12 student Maya Burhanpurkar has written/produced/directed a documentary about climate change. This 36 min film, 400PPM, is a visually stunning account of the effects of climate change on our world. Featuring astronaut Chris Hadfield, author Margaret Atwood, and renowned scientists, this film will leave you with a greater appreciation for our environment and desire to make positive change!

Indie Lit and Comic Festival

On November 27th, Bear Creek Secondary School will host the Psammead Indie Lit and Comic Festival. The festival lets the imagination of students and adults run wild with alternative arts workshops and panels including story and poem writing, filmmaking, digital art and entrepreneurship.

“We are very excited to have such a unique event at our school,” said Peter Bowman, Vice Principal of Bear Creek S.S. “Students will have the opportunity to be exposed to something different in the arts community.”

Special guests include:

  • Jen Frankel, author of Undead Redhead following the story of a vegan zombie
  • Adam Jack, filmmaker of 4 Years to Life and the television series Lost City
  • Heather Sutherland, digital artist and freelancer
  • Dan Holst Soelberg, author and illustrator
  • The Barrie Writer’s Club

The festival will begin at 3 p.m. and presentations and workshops will run throughout the day. Bear Creek Secondary School is located at 100 Red Oak Drive, in Barrie. This event costs $5.00 at the door.
