(from the QCSYS info email)

The Quantum Cryptography School for Young Students (QCSYS) is an exciting eight-day enrichment program for high school students hosted by the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. QCSYS will run August 9-16, 2019 with students arriving August 8 and departing August 17.

QCSYS offers an engaging blend of lectures, hands-on experiments and group work focused on quantum cryptography — a cutting-edge field that harnesses the fascinating features of quantum mechanics, like superposition, entanglement and uncertainty, to develop unbreakable encryption that protects our information.

Forty students get a first-hand look into the physics and mathematics of quantum mechanics, cryptography and how they merge into one of the most exciting topics in contemporary science — quantum cryptography. Not only do they meet and learn from with some of the most renowned researchers in the field, they get to build relationships with each other through daily social activities and during their stay in a university residence. All students stay together with QCSYS chaperones.

This school is for students:

  • In grades 11 or 12 (or equivalent) — exceptional grade 10 students may be accepted, space permitting
  • Age 15 years and older
  • Enrolled in or have completed grade 11 mathematics or higher (grade 11 physics is recommended but not mandatory)
  • Fluent in English

Costs

Upon acceptance into the program, students are responsible for a $250 CAD registration fee. They are also responsible for booking and paying for their travel to and from Waterloo. IQC offers bursaries to help cover the costs of registration and travel – students should apply for a bursary when filling out their application.

Applications, including references, are due March 22, 2019.
