FTC Coffee House

Students, parents and families are invited to Barrie North this Thursday, November 17th from 6:30pm to 9:30pm to support BNC’s Free the Children club at their annual Fall Coffee House. This is an amazing evening of entertainment and delicious snacks at which students and staff sing, play, recite and socialize to raise money for incredibly worthwhile causes. See you there!

Forum for Young Canadians

Students ages 15-19 are invited to apply to attend the Forum for Young Canadians. This event “brings over 100 students per week to Ottawa for an intensive academic adventure immersing them in the exciting world of national politics and public affairs. Students will…

  • gain a better understanding of the national decision-making process in Canada;
  • share their ideas and acquire tools for community engagement
  • enhance their leadership and second official language skills
  • network with other youth from across the country
  • travel to Ottawa and experience Parliament Hill during Canada’s 150th year;
  • participate in creating a federal budget and lobby stakeholder interests
  • attend an MP Dinner Reception and meet/network with MPs from across Canada…and sometimes even the Prime Minister” (from Forum Information Letter).

The deadline to apply is January 20, 2017, however the forum is saving at least one spot for Barrie North Collegiate for any students who apply before November 30th because we have had North students attend this program in the past. There is no maximum number of students who can apply from a high school, so all are welcome to do so. Bursaries are available.

Queen’s University E=MC2 Enrichement Program

Every year in May, several Barrie North students attend the week-long Queen’s University E=MC2 Enrichment program.

Students have the opportunity to learn beyond the high school classroom with engaging and challenging courses that motivate them to explore and apply new knowledge. They return to school with renewed energy, an excitement for learning, and ideas for post-secondary and career planning. Program Highights include:

  • Choice of one academic course from a variety of disciplines
  • 20 hours of classroom instruction over five days
  • Intensive, hands-on experience in state-of-the-art facilities
  • Courses taught by Queen’s students, faculty, and community professionals who have demonstrated excellence in their field
  • Learn and connect with like-minded peers
  • Mentorship by Queen’s undergraduate students
  • Participation in Wednesday Morning Workshops: presentations highlighting university life, resources for planning your post-secondary future, and the unique Queen’s University experience

The residence option provides a complete university experience. Students live in residence, attend daytime classes, eat breakfast and dinner in a campus dining hall, and participate in extracurricular activities on the Queen’s campus and around the Kingston community. The residence option also qualifies for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Gold Medal Residential Project” (from the E=MC2 Website)

Registration opens December 1st. Students who register before January 31, 2017 can pay the 2016 tuition rates. This week-long experience takes places May 7-12, 2017. There are several bursaries available, however it is important to note that the deadline for the main bursary fund is this Friday, November 18th.
