There are many ways that students can obtain their secondary school credits. Please read the information below to learn more about opportunities for learning this summer, online and for the next school year.

Geneva Park Leadership Program

The Simcoe County District School Board, in partnership with the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, is pleased to announce an exciting initiative at Geneva Park near Orillia.  Students have the opportunity to attend camp, create lasting friendships, enjoy a great outdoor education experience and earn credit(s).  Students will live on site and earn valuable certifications, including First Aid and CPR.  For more information please click here.

Dates: June 30th to July 27th – Age: 15-16 year olds 

Cost: $2000 +HST (Support available through the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign) 

ADVANCED LEADERS

Dates: July 28th to August 24th  – Age: 16-17 year olds 

Cost: $2000 +HST (Support available through the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign)

EDUTRAVEL

Adult & Continuing Education, in partnership with EduTravel, are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for students to travel and earn credits this summer. 

The Careers and Civics credits for travel will take students to Ottawa, Montreal and New York in July.

Grades 7, 8, and 9 Preparatory Math Program

This program is designed to prepare students entering grade 7, 8 or 9 in September for the upcoming year’s Math curriculum. Taught by qualified teachers the summer program is designed to be fun and engaging with a focus on social justice. Students must be approved by their principal to register for a Math Prep course.  

Courses will be held at 5 Learning Centres in Alliston, Barrie, Bradford, Collingwood and Orillia.  In Midland classes will be at Midland Secondary School. 

August 10 –21, 2015; Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 1 PM 

Limited bus transportation is available for this program.  Bus Route information will be available here June 2015.SCDSB students currently in elementary school can register online. The Principal at the home school will electronically approve the student’s choice.

Grade 9 & 10 Science & English Credit Upgrade

Students who have taken Grade 9 or 10 Science or English at the applied or academic level can raise their previous mark and become better prepared for the next grade level by participating in this remedial program.

Courses will be held at Bear Creek Secondary School in Barrie.

Science dates:  July 6 – 16, 2015.

English dates: July 20 – 30, 2015. 

Monday – Thursday, 9 AM – 3:30 PM

Limited bus transportation is available for this program.  Bus route information will be available here June 2015.

Grade 9 & 10 Math Credit Upgrade

Grade 9 Math Transfer Course

This transfer course will provide students who have successfully completed Grade 9, Applied Math (MFM1P) with an opportunity to achieve the expectations not covered in that course but included in Grade 9, Academic Math (MPM1D).  On successful completion of this transfer course, students may proceed to Grade 10, Academic (MPM2D). 

Prerequisite: Foundations of Mathematics, Grade 9, Applied (MFM1P)

The Math Transfer course will be offered at Bear Creek Secondary School July 13 – 23, 2015, Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 3:36 pm

Grade 11 and 12 Credit Courses

This program offers students the opportunity to complete a senior credit course during the summer months.  

Courses are offered at Bear Creek Secondary School, July 6 – 30, 2015. 

Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 3:30 PM

There is a $50 CASH refundable textbook deposit to be collected by your teacher on the first day of class.

eLearning Grade 10 Civics and Careers Credit

These eLearning courses allow students to complete their required Civics (CHV2O) and/or Careers (GLC2O) during the summer.  Each course is offered in an online format and runs from July 6 – 24 or July 27 – August 14, 2015.  It would be possible for a diligent student to complete both these courses during the time allotted. 

eLearning Grade 12 English, Chemistry or Families in Canada

These eLearning courses allow students to complete a grade 12 compulsory English or Chemistry or a Social Science course during the summer.  ENG4C (college preparation)or ENG4U (university preparation) are offered as well as SCH4U and HHS4U.  Each course is offered in an online format from July 6 – August14, 2015

Mental Health Workshop

Innisdale Secondary School invites all parents/guardians to attend a workshop entitled “Making Connections for Mental Health” on April 15.

Wendy Stanyon, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and a mental health nurse, will talk about the growing concern of mental illness in Canada and the stigma associated with it. She will also discuss what parents can do to help their child grow stronger and more resilient, and how to deal with various mental health issues.

The presentation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Innisdale library. The school is located at 95 Little Ave. in Barrie. All Simcoe County District School Board parents are invited to attend.

Precision Metal Cutting Program Information Session

Grade 11 students and parents are invited to attend an information session about the Precision Metal Cutting (PMC) program offered through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).

“The PMC is an exciting opportunity that can put students on a pathway to completing their qualifications as a tool and die maker, general machinist or mould maker,” said Sarah Kekewich, OYAP coordinator, Simcoe County District School Board. “This specialized program helps students achieve their first level of apprenticeship as they earn industry work experience and credits towards their high school diploma.”

Information sessions will take place on:

    April 15, 2015 – Holiday Inn, Barrie (20 Fairview Road) 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

   April 23, 2015 – Best Western, Midland (924 King Street) 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

The PMC program was created by local employers through OYAP to address the shortage of skilled labourers in the PMC trades – tool and die maker, general machinist or mould maker.
